The Open RAN ecosystem is changing rapidly.
After gradual initial adoption, Open RAN growth is now forecast to accelerate through 2030, as more operators upgrade their networks for faster innovation and greater flexibility.
I’m Rob Hughes, Head of Wireless Marketing at 1Finity. I’m here for an open dialogue about how the Open RAN ecosystem is growing.
Expanding from Greenfield to Brownfield Deployments
Now that the big three mobile network ecosystem vendors have completed Open RAN projects, there’s clear potential for Open RAN to expand beyond the first greenfield deployments.
This means an influx of diverse vendors is now accelerating innovation and competitiveness in every sector of the market, including both traditional and specialist RAN vendors, as well as systems integrators and an array of niche suppliers, all of whom see potential for global growth.
Open RAN Ecosystem is Delivering as Promised
Overall, the Open RAN ecosystem is delivering as promised. It’s thriving and becoming a vibrant, transformative force. Solutions are rapidly being adopted, and major network operators are building the technology into their strategic roadmaps.
The Installed Base is Growing, Standards and Specifications are Maturing
In fact, according to Téral Research, the global Open RAN installed base has grown significantly, increasing from 261,000 radios in 2021 to more than a million radios by the end of 2024.
Standardization bodies worldwide have worked to clarify and enhance Open RAN specifications, and consensus is emerging that it’s a mainstream technology that’s here to stay.
Resolving Open RAN Integration Concerns
Open RAN enables faster innovation, freedom from vendor lock-in, access to the best solutions, a secure supply chain and a resilient business. However, despite its many benefits, some mobile operators still remain hesitant to implement it.
They view integration complexities and the required investments of time and money as major obstacles. As initial deployments got underway, legitimate concerns centered on the complexities of integrating disaggregated components from multiple vendors.
But as Open RAN technology has matured, vendors have partnered to verify interoperability and learn to simplify and accelerate integration. As a result, these risks have largely been addressed and mitigated.
Increasing Adoption and Shared Validation
Help to Prove Value in Commercial Settings
Increasing adoption of O-RAN by major telecom vendors, as well as shared validation initiatives among vendors, mobile operators, and testing labs, are alleviating concerns by proving that Open RAN performs well in real-world, commercial networks.
